In July 2007, the Queensland Gas Market became contestable.

Victorian regulator VENCorp has the role of Gas Market Retail Operator (GMRO) to provide retail gas market services for Full Retail Contestability (FRC) in Queensland. FRC allows Queensland’s 150,000 gas customers to contract for the supply of gas with the licensed retailer of their choice. As the facilitator for gas FRC functions, VENCorp’s role involves development, maintenance and administration of retail rules and provides services to assist FRC, including operating the centralised IT systems.
