Synergen Becomes Utilisoft’s First Customer in Ireland’s Single Electricity Market

Synergen Power Ltd, a joint venture between ESB International and RBS Power Investments Ireland Ltd, is an Independent Power Producer operating in the liberalised electricity market in the Republic of Ireland. Synergen has selected a range of modules from Utilisoft that will manage the wholesale trading market interfaces and Power Plant bidding.

The All Island Single Electricity Market (SEM) is the wholesale electricity market being implemented across the entire island of Ireland, from November 2007. This new market will replace the current arrangement where electricity is bought directly by supply companies from power generators based on a series of contracts. In the SEM, competing generators will offer their output through a pool market where all electricity for the whole island will be bought and sold. All electricity companies in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland will be required to buy and sell energy through this market.

The core component in Utilisoft’s solution is the Market Message Hub.Based on Utilisoft’s market leading GateKeeper software, the Market Message Hub provides a web services application to push encrypted data to the central market systems and to receive incoming data and will be fully conformant with the API message formats. The Market Message Hub polls for the various data feeds within the SEM participants’ systems and performs all necessary processing to create messages to send to the central market systems and provides a web based user interface.

Caitriona Kinsman, General Manager at Synergen, said, “We undertook a rigorous selection process in identifying the supplier of the systems to support our SEM participation. We selected Utilisoft based on the proven track record of their technologies. Utilisoft’s knowledge and experience in the UK, Irish and Australian market gives us great assurance that we will meet all the market requirements in 2007.

John Furness, Managing Director of Utilisoft, said “We are delighted that Synergen is the first participant to select Utilisoft to provide the SEM solution for the All Island Market. We believe that we have a lot to offer the Irish market in terms of our past experience in providing software to participants in emerging energy markets. We are looking forward to working with Synergen and several other market participants on this exciting project.
